Pig Breeding
The power of pigs against poverty was proved to us when we assisted the Sawe women's group in establishing their pig breeding businesses.
The project resulted in every member of the women's group having a sow - and with it, the potential to earn significant money.
As each woman ran her business, we quickly saw how valuable these porcine assets were proving to be. However, the project encountered an unforeseen hurdle when the town's boundaries were redrawn, enclosing Sawe within it. As keeping pigs is not permitted in a town, many of the community had to sell their stock.
However, others chose to move their pigs to more rural areas, and continue to profit from their businesses.
We look forward to relaunching this very successful programme in more rural communities, as and when it is needed and desired.
