SWASH

Water, sanitation and hygiene are intrinsically linked - which is what led to SWASH: School's Water, Sanitation and Hygiene.

Its aim is to give all the schools we work with:

  1. reliable access to safe drinking water - also useful for cooking, cleaning and washing
  2. access to clean and secure toilets which meet the needs of all users
  3. a positive attitude to good hygiene practices, with access to hand washing facilities and soap

As a result, we are building new toilets in our partner schools, complete with tiled floors, adequate light and ventilation, a bucket flush system and hand washing facilities. The girls' toilets are adapted to ensure include incinerators and a private wash area.

It is rare to find World Health Organisation (WHO)-standard toilets in Tanzanian schools - but that is exactly what we want to achieve in Babati.
