Lets Stay Safe at School Year 1
In the summer 2020 we started to develop the Tubaki Shuleni Salama - Lets Stay Safe at School Programme. This was our first major behaviour change programme in the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) arena.
The programme evolved out of various different needs that the communities were telling us about.
Poor hand hygiene at schools caused by lack of facilities and lack of full understanding as to its importance.
Poor knowledge within the community and teaching community on how best to tackle the challenges of teaching about puberty and the misinformation and taboo surrounding menstruation, which result in shame, embarrassment and an absence of suitable toilet facilities to meet the needs of the girls.
Insufficient and extremely poor quality of toilet facilities for students at school.
As a charity we work with the community to address the barriers that hinder equal access to quality education and it was clear that the issues the community were reporting were causing ill health and absenteeism which impact on a child’s ability to learn.
With the help of many donors and the Big Give Christmas 2020 Campaign, we raised sufficient funds to tackle this problem in 3 schools.
