Malangi Teachers' Houses are Completed
We are thrilled to have completed the building of four brand new teachers' houses at Malangi Primary School. Each house has two bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen with a store, a shower, a toilet and a spacious courtyard. The houses have guttering to catch rain water and each has a 5,000 litre water storage tank.
In Tanzania it is the responsibility of the community to provide the teachers at their schools with suitable accommodation, and it is even more important in the rural areas. This is a major challenge for the community who are already living with their own hardships. The Malangi community recognised that attracting and retaining good teachers was a major barrier to their school's development and that if they wanted the development they had already invested so much in to be meaningful, that hurdle had to be overcome.
The community provided all the foundation stones and building bricks and also contributed their labour in terms of preparing the land by digging and laying the foundations as well as excavating the 30ft deep cesspit.
The teachers and the school development committee will ensure the houses are well maintained in order to provide sustainable housing on site for generations to come.
At a wonderful celebration to recognise the successful completion of the project, Julian handed over the keys to the Town Education Department. The Malangi Primary School, which the council considered closing just five years ago, is now considered "the Best Primary School in Babati". This is the result of the incredible Malangi community coming together to work towards the changes they wanted to see and the amazing support of our funders, supporters and volunteers. Thank you to everyone for being part of this remarkable journey.
